How to measure blood pressure correctly? Always measure your blood pressure at the same time of day. Since each of us has about 100,000 different blood pressure levels every day, individual measurements are meaningless. Only regular measurements at the same time of day over a long period of time allow for an assessment of blood pressure. Do not consume nicotine or coffee for at least an hour before measuring your blood pressure at home or at the pharmacy. After a rest period of 5 to 10 minutes, measure your blood pressure while sitting. Do not measure your blood pressure when you feel the urge to urinate. A full bladder can cause your blood pressure to rise by approximately 10 mm Hg. Before measuring your blood pressure, carefully read the instructions for use of the blood pressure monitor. Correct use ensures the quality of the measurements and allows you to obtain accurate results. When using a blood pressure monitor, keep your wrist at heart level during the measurement. When using an upper arm device, the upper arm is automatically at the correct height. Do not talk or move during the measurement. Talking increases the values by approximately 6-7 mm Hg. Wait at least 1 minute between measurements so that the vessels are not under pressure during the new measurement. Record the values in a measurement logbook: always record the measured values, as well as the medications taken, the date, and the time of measurement. Measure your blood pressure regularly. Even if your values improve, you should continue to measure your blood pressure as a preventive measure.
