Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids.
- They are yellow/orange pigments found in fruits and vegetables, mainly in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach
- These carotenoids, antioxidant vitamins, and the minerals zinc and selenium (as substances important antioxidant enzymes) are key to the functioning of the eye's defense system against oxidative damage
- Lutein and zeaxanthin are normally found in the center of the eye
- High levels of these carotenoids are found in the macula (yellow spot), the part of the eye responsible central vision and highest visual acuity
- Together, they form the so-called macular pigment
Lutein and zeaxanthin act here as a blue light filter - similar to internal sunglasses - and as powerful antioxidants.
